[280] "What do you think, Māgaṇḍiya? Here, someone might formerly have amused himself with forms cognizable by the eye — wished for, desirable, agreeable, endearing, connected with sensuality, provocative of lust — and at a later time, having understood as it really is (yathābhūta) the origin (samudaya), the disappearance, the gratification, the danger, and the escape in regard to forms themselves, having abandoned craving (taṇhā) for forms and dispelled the fever for forms, he might dwell rid of thirst, with a mind inwardly at peace. What, Māgaṇḍiya, would you have to say to this person?"
"Nothing, Master Gotama."
"What do you think, Māgaṇḍiya? Here, someone might formerly have amused himself with sounds cognizable by the ear … with odours cognizable by the nose … with tastes cognizable by the tongue … with tangibles cognizable by the body — wished for, desirable, agreeable, endearing, connected with sensuality, provocative of lust — and at a later time, having understood as it really is the origin, the disappearance, the gratification, the danger, and the escape in regard to tangibles themselves, having abandoned craving for tangibles and dispelled the fever for tangibles, he might dwell rid of thirst, with a mind inwardly at peace. What, Māgaṇḍiya, would you have to say to this person?"
