[297] Furthermore, Sandaka, here some teacher holds such a doctrine and such a view: 'For one who acts and one who makes others act, for one who mutilates and one who makes others mutilate, for one who tortures and one who makes others torture, for one who inflicts sorrow and one who makes others inflict sorrow, for one who oppresses and one who makes others oppress, for one who intimidates and one who makes others intimidate, for one who causes living creatures to be slain, who takes what is not given, breaks into houses, carries off plunder, commits burglary on a lone house, lies in ambush by the highway, goes to another's wife, speaks falsehood — for one so acting, no evil is done. Even if with a razor-rimmed wheel one were to reduce the living creatures of this earth to a single threshing-floor of flesh, a single heap of flesh, there would be no evil from that cause, no coming of evil. Even if one were to go along the south bank of the Gaṅgā killing and causing to kill, mutilating and causing to mutilate, torturing and causing to torture, there would be no evil from that cause, no coming of evil. Even if one were to go along the north bank of the Gaṅgā giving and causing to give, sacrificing and causing to sacrifice, there would be no merit from that cause, no coming of merit. Through giving, through self-taming, through restraint, through the speaking of truth, there is no merit, no coming of merit.'
