[663] One teacher holds such a doctrine, such a view: "For one who acts and for one who makes others act, for one who cuts and for one who makes others cut, for one who torments and for one who makes others torment, for one who inflicts sorrow and for one who makes others inflict sorrow, for one who oppresses and for one who makes others oppress, for one who makes tremble and for one who makes others tremble, for one who destroys life, takes what is not given, breaks into houses, carries off plunder, commits burglary upon a single house, lies in wait on the highway, goes to another's wife, speaks falsehood — for one so acting, no evil (pāpa) is done. Even if, with a wheel rimmed with razors, one were to make the living beings of this earth into one mass of flesh, one heap of flesh, there would be no evil on that account, no coming of evil. Even if one were to go along the south bank of the Gaṅgā killing and slaughtering, cutting and making others cut, tormenting and making others torment, there would be no evil on that account, no coming of evil. Even if one were to go along the north bank of the Gaṅgā giving and making others give, sacrificing and making others sacrifice, there would be no merit (puñña) on that account, no coming of merit. By giving, by self-taming, by restraint, by truthful speech, there is no merit, no coming of merit."
