[316] "Venerable sir, let that talk be set aside — the talk for which we are now seated together; that talk will not be difficult for the Blessed One to hear even later. Venerable sir, in days past, some days ago now, when ascetics and brahmins of various sects were seated and assembled together in the debating hall (kutūhalasālā), this conversation arose among them: 'It is a gain, sirs, for the people of Aṅga and Magadha! It is well gained indeed, sirs, for the people of Aṅga and Magadha, in that these ascetics and brahmins — leaders of orders, leaders of communities, teachers of communities, well-known, famous, founders of sects (titthakara), deemed holy by many people — have come to Rājagaha for the rains residence. This Pūraṇa Kassapa is a leader of an order, a leader of a community, a teacher of a community, well-known, famous, a founder of a sect, deemed holy by many people; he too has come to Rājagaha for the rains residence. This Makkhali Gosāla … Ajita Kesakambala … Pakudha Kaccāyana … Sañjaya Velaṭṭhaputta … this Nigaṇṭha Nāṭaputta is a leader of an order, a leader of a community, a teacher of a community, well-known, famous, a founder of a sect, deemed holy by many people; he too has come to Rājagaha for the rains residence. This ascetic Gotama also is a leader of an order, a leader of a community, a teacher of a community, well-known, famous, a founder of a sect, deemed holy by many people; he too has come to Rājagaha for the rains residence. Which, now, of these honorable ascetics and brahmins — leaders of orders, leaders of communities, teachers of communities, well-known, famous, founders of sects, deemed holy by many people — is honored, respected, esteemed, and venerated by his disciples? And how do the disciples, honoring and respecting him, live in dependence upon him?'"
