[317] Thereupon some spoke thus: "This Pūraṇa Kassapa, though he is the leader of an order, the leader of a group, the teacher of a group, well-known, famous, a sect-founder (titthakara), regarded as excellent by many people, is nevertheless not honored, not respected, not esteemed, not venerated by his disciples; nor do his disciples, having honored and respected Pūraṇa Kassapa, live in dependence upon him. Once it happened that Pūraṇa Kassapa was teaching his doctrine to an assembly of many hundreds. Then a certain disciple of Pūraṇa Kassapa made a noise: 'Sirs, do not ask Pūraṇa Kassapa about this matter; he does not know it. We know it. Ask us about this matter; we shall answer it for you, sirs.' Once it happened that Pūraṇa Kassapa, raising his arms and crying out, did not get his way: 'Be quiet, sirs; do not make a noise, sirs. They are not asking you; they are asking us. We shall answer them.' Moreover, many disciples of Pūraṇa Kassapa, having refuted his doctrine, departed, saying: 'You do not understand this Dhamma and Discipline; I understand this Dhamma and Discipline. How could you understand this Dhamma and Discipline? You are practicing wrongly; I am practicing rightly. What I say is consistent; what you say is inconsistent. What should have been said first, you said last; what should have been said last, you said first. What you have long practiced has been turned upside down. Your doctrine has been exposed; you stand refuted. Go about to free yourself from your doctrine, or extricate yourself if you are able.' Thus Pūraṇa Kassapa is not honored, not respected, not esteemed, not venerated by his disciples; nor do his disciples, having honored and respected Pūraṇa Kassapa, live in dependence upon him; and moreover, Pūraṇa Kassapa is reviled with reproach that accords with the Dhamma."
