[326] "'The ascetic Gotama is content (santuṭṭha) with any kind of almsfood (piṇḍapāta) whatsoever, and speaks in praise of contentment with any kind of almsfood whatsoever' — if, Udāyi, my disciples were to honor, respect, esteem, and venerate me for this, and having honored and respected me, were to live in dependence on me — yet, Udāyi, there are disciples of mine who keep the practice of eating only almsfood, who keep the practice of walking on uninterrupted almsround from house to house, who delight in the practice of [accepting] food whether superior or inferior; when they have entered among the houses, they do not consent even when invited to a seat. But I, Udāyi, sometimes eat even on invitation boiled rice of the sāli grain with the black grains picked out, together with many soups and many curries. 'The ascetic Gotama is content with any kind of almsfood whatsoever, and speaks in praise of contentment with any kind of almsfood whatsoever' — if, Udāyi, my disciples were to honor, respect, esteem, and venerate me for this, and having honored and respected me, were to live in dependence on me, then, Udāyi, those disciples of mine who keep the practice of eating only almsfood, who keep the practice of walking on uninterrupted almsround from house to house, who delight in the practice of [accepting] food whether superior or inferior, and who, having entered among the houses, do not consent even when invited to a seat — they would not honor, respect, esteem, or venerate me on account of this quality, nor, having honored and respected me, would they live in dependence on me."
