Sekhasutta

[34] "Mahānāma, that a noble disciple is accomplished in virtue — this too pertains to his conduct (caraṇa). That a noble disciple, Mahānāma, guards the doors of the sense faculties — this too pertains to his conduct. That a noble disciple, Mahānāma, knows moderation in eating — this too pertains to his conduct. That a noble disciple, Mahānāma, is devoted to wakefulness — this too pertains to his conduct. That a noble disciple, Mahānāma, is possessed of the seven good qualities (saddhamma) — this too pertains to his conduct. That a noble disciple, Mahānāma, is one who gains at will, without trouble, without difficulty, the four jhānas that pertain to the higher mind and are pleasant abidings here and now — this too pertains to his conduct. And, Mahānāma, that a noble disciple recollects his manifold past lives (pubbenivāsa) — that is, one birth, two births … Thus, with their aspects and particulars, he recollects his manifold past lives — this pertains to his true knowledge (vijjā). That a noble disciple, Mahānāma, with the divine eye (dibbacakkhu), purified and surpassing the human, … understands beings as faring according to their kamma — this too pertains to his true knowledge. That a noble disciple, Mahānāma, through the destruction of the taints (āsava), having realized for himself with direct knowledge, in this very life, the taintless liberation of mind (cetovimutti) and liberation by wisdom (paññāvimutti), enters upon and dwells in it — this too pertains to his true knowledge. This one, Mahānāma, is called a noble disciple who is accomplished in true knowledge, who is accomplished in conduct, who is accomplished in true knowledge and conduct. And, Mahānāma, this verse was spoken by the Brahmā Sanaṅkumāra: 'The khattiya is the best among people who take clan as the standard; but one accomplished in true knowledge and conduct — he is the best among devas and humans.'"
