[354] "Furthermore, Udāyi, I have declared to my disciples the way of practice (paṭipadā), practicing in accordance with which my disciples, through the destruction of the taints (āsava), realize for themselves with direct knowledge (abhiññā), in this very life, the taintless liberation of mind (cetovimutti) and liberation by wisdom (paññāvimutti), and having entered upon it, they dwell therein. Just as, Udāyi, there might be a lake in a mountain glen, clear, limpid, unclouded, and a man with good eyesight, standing on the bank, would see the shellfish and mussels, the gravel and pebbles, and the shoals of fish moving about and standing still; and it might occur to him: 'This lake is clear, limpid, unclouded; and here are these shellfish and mussels, gravel and pebbles, and shoals of fish, moving about and standing still' — even so, Udāyi, I have declared to my disciples the way of practice, practicing in accordance with which my disciples, through the destruction of the taints, realize for themselves with direct knowledge, in this very life, the taintless liberation of mind and liberation by wisdom, and having entered upon it, they dwell therein.
And therein many of my disciples dwell, having attained the consummation and perfection of direct knowledge."
