[38] The Blessed One said this: "Householder, these eight things lead to the cutting off of worldly dealings (vohāra) in the discipline of the Noble One. What eight? The killing of living beings should be given up in reliance on the non-killing of living beings; the taking of what is not given should be given up in reliance on taking only what is given; false speech should be given up in reliance on truthful speech; divisive speech should be given up in reliance on speech that is not divisive; greedy covetousness (giddhilobha) should be given up in reliance on the absence of greedy covetousness; blaming and anger (nindārosa) should be given up in reliance on the absence of blaming and anger; anger and despair (kodhūpāyāsa) should be given up in reliance on the absence of anger and despair; arrogance (atimāna) should be given up in reliance on non-arrogance. These, householder, are the eight things, stated in brief without being analysed in detail, that lead to the cutting off of worldly dealings in the discipline of the Noble One."
"Venerable sir, as to these eight things which the Blessed One has stated in brief without analysing them in detail, which lead to the cutting off of worldly dealings in the discipline of the Noble One — it would be good, venerable sir, if the Blessed One, out of compassion, would analyse these eight things for me in detail."
"Then, householder, listen and attend well; I shall speak."
"Yes, venerable sir," Potaliya the householder replied to the Blessed One.
