[37] The Blessed One said this to Potaliya the householder as he stood to one side: "There are seats, householder; if you wish, sit down."
When this was said, Potaliya the householder, thinking, "The ascetic Gotama addresses me with the word 'householder'!" — angry and displeased, remained silent.
A second time the Blessed One said to Potaliya the householder: "There are seats, householder; if you wish, sit down." A second time Potaliya the householder, thinking, "The ascetic Gotama addresses me with the word 'householder'!" — angry and displeased, remained silent.
A third time the Blessed One said to Potaliya the householder: "There are seats, householder; if you wish, sit down." When this was said, Potaliya the householder, thinking, "The ascetic Gotama addresses me with the word 'householder'!" — angry and displeased, said this to the Blessed One: "Master Gotama, it is neither fitting nor proper that you address me with the word 'householder'."
"But, householder, you have the aspects, the marks, and the signs of a householder."
"Even so, Master Gotama; yet all works have been renounced by me, all business (vohāra) has been cut off."
"But in what way, householder, have all works been renounced by you, and all business been cut off?"
"Here, Master Gotama, whatever I had — whether wealth, or grain, or silver, or gold — all that has been made over to my sons as their inheritance. In that matter I abide giving no advice and no reproof, living with merely food and clothing as my utmost. It is in this way, Master Gotama, that all works have been renounced by me, and all business cut off."
"The cutting off of business as you speak of it, householder, is one thing; but the cutting off of business in the discipline of the Noble One (ariyassa vinaye) is another."
"But how, venerable sir, is there the cutting off of business in the discipline of the Noble One? It would be good, venerable sir, if the Blessed One would teach me the Dhamma in such a way that there is the cutting off of business in the discipline of the Noble One."
"Then, householder, listen and attend well; I shall speak."
"Yes, venerable sir," Potaliya the householder replied to the Blessed One.
