[400] When this was said, the wanderer Vekhanasa, angry and displeased, reviling the Blessed One, disparaging the Blessed One, and speaking against the Blessed One, saying, "The ascetic Gotama shall be discredited!" said this to the Blessed One: "In just this way, some ascetics and brahmins here, not knowing the beginning (pubbanta), not knowing the end (aparanta), nevertheless claim: 'We understand: birth (jāti) is destroyed, the holy life (brahmacariya) has been lived, what had to be done has been done, there is no more of this state of being.' This statement of theirs turns out to be simply laughable, turns out to be simply contemptible, turns out to be simply empty, turns out to be simply hollow."
