[423] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One, wandering on tour among the Kurus together with a large Saṅgha of bhikkhus, arrived at a market town of the Kurus named Thullakoṭṭhita. The brahmins and householders of Thullakoṭṭhita heard: "The ascetic Gotama, sirs, a son of the Sakyans, gone forth from the Sakyan clan, wandering on tour among the Kurus with a large Saṅgha of bhikkhus, has arrived at Thullakoṭṭhita. Now concerning that Master Gotama such a fair report of fame has spread abroad: 'Thus indeed is that Blessed One: an arahant, fully awakened by himself, accomplished in true knowledge (vijjā) and conduct, the Well-Gone One, knower of the world, unsurpassed charioteer of persons to be tamed, teacher of devas and humans, the Awakened One, the Blessed One. Having realized it himself with direct knowledge (abhiññā), he makes known this world with its devas, its Māras, and its Brahmās, this generation with its ascetics and brahmins, with its devas and humans. He teaches the Dhamma that is good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, with its meaning and its phrasing; he reveals the holy life (brahmacariya) that is utterly complete and pure. It is good indeed to see arahants such as this.'"
