[239] Thus have I heard. At one time the Blessed One was dwelling at Vesālī, in the Great Wood, in the Hall with the Peaked Roof (Kūṭāgārasālā).
Now at that time several brahmin emissaries from Kosala and brahmin emissaries from Magadha were residing in Vesālī on some business. Those brahmin emissaries from Kosala and brahmin emissaries from Magadha heard: "It is said, sirs, that the ascetic Gotama, the son of the Sakyans, gone forth from a Sakyan family, is dwelling at Vesālī, in the Great Wood, in the Hall with the Peaked Roof. Now concerning that worthy Gotama such a fair report of fame has spread abroad: 'Thus indeed is that Blessed One … a Buddha, a Blessed One.' He, having himself realized this world with its gods, with its Māras … And it is good indeed to see such arahants (arahataṃ)."
Then those brahmin emissaries from Kosala and brahmin emissaries from Magadha approached the Great Wood, the Hall with the Peaked Roof.
