[425] Now at that time a clansman (kulaputta) named Raṭṭhapāla, the son of the foremost family in that very Thullakoṭṭhika, was seated in that assembly. Then it occurred to Raṭṭhapāla the clansman: "As I understand the Dhamma taught by the Blessed One, it is not easy for one dwelling at home to live the holy life (brahmacariya) utterly perfect, utterly pure, polished like a conch shell. What if I were to shave off my hair and beard, put on the ochre robes, and go forth from the home life into homelessness?"
Then the brahmins and householders of Thullakoṭṭhika, having been instructed, roused, inspired, and gladdened by the Blessed One with a talk on Dhamma, having delighted in and approved of the Blessed One's words, rose from their seats, paid homage to the Blessed One, circumambulated him keeping him on their right, and departed.
Then, not long after the brahmins and householders of Thullakoṭṭhika had departed, Raṭṭhapāla the clansman approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down to one side. Seated to one side, Raṭṭhapāla the clansman said to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, as I understand the Dhamma taught by the Blessed One, it is not easy for one dwelling at home to live the holy life utterly perfect, utterly pure, polished like a conch shell. I wish, venerable sir, to shave off my hair and beard, put on the ochre robes, and go forth from the home life into homelessness. May I receive, venerable sir, the going forth (pabbajjā) in the presence of the Blessed One; may I receive the full admission (upasampadā)."
"But have you, Raṭṭhapāla, been permitted by your mother and father to go forth from the home life into homelessness?"
"Venerable sir, I have not been permitted by my mother and father to go forth from the home life into homelessness."
"Raṭṭhapāla, Tathāgatas do not give the going forth to a son whom his mother and father have not permitted."
"Then, venerable sir, I shall act in such a way that my mother and father will permit me to go forth from the home life into homelessness."
