[430] Then the companions of Raṭṭhapāla the clansman (kulaputta) approached Raṭṭhapāla the clansman; and having approached, they said this to Raṭṭhapāla the clansman: "Friend Raṭṭhapāla, you are your parents' only son, dear and beloved, raised in comfort, nurtured in comfort. Friend Raṭṭhapāla, you know nothing whatever of suffering (dukkha). Get up, friend Raṭṭhapāla — eat, drink, and amuse yourself. While eating, drinking, and amusing yourself, enjoying sensual pleasures and making merit, take your delight! Your parents do not allow you to go forth from the home life into homelessness. Even by your death your parents will be separated from you against their wishes; how then will they allow you, while you are still living, to go forth from the home life into homelessness?" When this was said, Raṭṭhapāla the clansman remained silent. A second time … A third time the companions of Raṭṭhapāla the clansman said this to Raṭṭhapāla the clansman: "Friend Raṭṭhapāla, you are your parents' only son, dear and beloved, raised in comfort, nurtured in comfort … Get up, friend Raṭṭhapāla — eat, drink, and amuse yourself. Then the companions of Raṭṭhapāla the clansman approached the mother and father of Raṭṭhapāla the clansman; and having approached, they said this to the mother and father of Raṭṭhapāla the clansman: "Mother and father, this Raṭṭhapāla the clansman is lying right there on the bare ground, saying: 'Right here will be either my death or my going forth.' If you do not allow Raṭṭhapāla the clansman to go forth from the home life into homelessness, his death will take place right there. But if you allow Raṭṭhapāla the clansman to go forth from the home life into homelessness, you will see him even when he has gone forth. If Raṭṭhapāla the clansman finds no delight in the going forth from the home life into homelessness, what other destination will there be for him? He will come back right here. Allow Raṭṭhapāla the clansman to go forth from the home life into homelessness."
