[434] Then the Venerable Raṭṭhapāla approached the Blessed One; having approached, he paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side. Seated to one side, the Venerable Raṭṭhapāla said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, I wish to see my mother and father, if the Blessed One permits me."
Then the Blessed One, having encompassed with his own mind the mind of the Venerable Raṭṭhapāla, gave attention to it. When the Blessed One knew, "The clansman Raṭṭhapāla is incapable of renouncing the training and reverting to the lower life," then the Blessed One said this to the Venerable Raṭṭhapāla: "Raṭṭhapāla, do now as you think fit."
Then the Venerable Raṭṭhapāla rose from his seat, paid homage to the Blessed One, and, keeping him on his right, set his lodging in order, took his bowl and robe, and set out on a wandering journey toward Thullakoṭṭhita. Wandering by stages, he arrived at Thullakoṭṭhita.
