[436] Now on that occasion a bondservant of Venerable Raṭṭhapāla's relatives wished to throw away some stale porridge (kummāsa) from the previous night. Then Venerable Raṭṭhapāla said to that bondservant of his relatives: "If that is to be thrown away, sister, pour it here into my bowl." Then, as the bondservant of Venerable Raṭṭhapāla's relatives was pouring that stale porridge from the previous night into Venerable Raṭṭhapāla's bowl, she recognized the characteristic features of his hands, his feet, and his voice. Then the bondservant of Venerable Raṭṭhapāla's relatives approached Venerable Raṭṭhapāla's mother and, having approached, said to Venerable Raṭṭhapāla's mother: "Please, my lady, you should know: the young master Raṭṭhapāla has arrived."
"If you speak the truth, wench, I shall make you a slave no longer!"
Then Venerable Raṭṭhapāla's mother approached Venerable Raṭṭhapāla's father and, having approached, said to Venerable Raṭṭhapāla's father: "Please, householder, you should know: it seems the clansman Raṭṭhapāla has arrived."
