[44] "'Blaming and insulting (nindārosa) should be given up, relying on not blaming and insulting.' Thus it was said; and with reference to what was this said? Here, householder, a noble disciple reflects thus: 'I am practicing for the abandoning, for the cutting off, of those fetters (saṃyojana) on account of which I might engage in blaming and insulting. But if I were to engage in blaming and insulting, I myself would reproach myself on account of blaming and insulting; the wise, having investigated, would censure me on account of blaming and insulting; and with the breakup of the body, after death, a bad destination would be to be expected on account of blaming and insulting. This very blaming and insulting is itself a fetter, is itself a hindrance (nīvaraṇa). And those taints (āsava), vexatious and feverish, that might arise on account of blaming and insulting do not occur for one who does not blame and insult.' 'Blaming and insulting should be given up, relying on not blaming and insulting' — what was thus said, it was with reference to this that it was said."
