[45] "'Anger and despair (kodhūpāyāsa) should be given up in dependence on the absence of anger and despair' — so it was said. And with reference to what was this said? Here, householder, a noble disciple reflects thus: 'I am practicing for the abandoning and cutting off of those fetters (saṃyojana) on account of which I might be given to anger and despair. But if I were given to anger and despair, I myself might reproach myself on account of anger and despair; the wise, having investigated, would censure me on account of anger and despair; and with the breaking up of the body, after death, a bad destination would be expected on account of anger and despair. And this very anger and despair is itself a fetter, it is a hindrance (nīvaraṇa). And those taints (āsava), distressing and feverish, that might arise on account of anger and despair do not occur for one who is without anger and despair.' 'Anger and despair should be given up in dependence on the absence of anger and despair' — what was thus said, it was with reference to this that it was said."
