[465] "Great king, that is merely a proclamation in the world: 'Only brahmins (brāhmaṇa) are the best class (vaṇṇa); any other class is inferior. Only brahmins are the white class; any other class is dark. Only brahmins are purified, not non-brahmins. Only brahmins are Brahmā's sons, his true offspring, born from his mouth, born of Brahmā, created by Brahmā, heirs of Brahmā.' And by this method too, great king, it should be understood that this is merely a proclamation in the world: 'Only brahmins are the best class; any other class is inferior … heirs of Brahmā.'
"What do you think, great king? If a khattiya should prosper — with wealth, or grain, or silver, or gold — would a khattiya too rise before him and retire after him, be eager to serve him, conduct himself agreeably toward him, and speak pleasantly to him? Would a brahmin too … a vessa too … a sudda too rise before him and retire after him, be eager to serve him, conduct himself agreeably toward him, and speak pleasantly to him?"
