[499] Prince, this thought occurred to me: 'Suppose I were to meditate in the breathless meditation (appānaka jhāna).' So, Prince, I stopped the in-breaths and out-breaths through my mouth, my nose, and my ear-passages. When, Prince, the in-breaths and out-breaths were stopped through my mouth, my nose, and my ear-passages, winds of exceeding violence carved through my belly. Just as, Prince, a skilled cattle-butcher or a cattle-butcher's apprentice might carve through a belly with a sharp butcher's knife, even so, Prince, when the in-breaths and out-breaths were stopped through my mouth, my nose, and my ear-passages, winds of exceeding violence carved through my belly. But, Prince, my energy (vīriya) was aroused and unflagging, my mindfulness (sati) was established and unmuddled; yet my body was strained and uncalmed, for I was overwhelmed by that very painful striving.
