[746] Bhāradvāja, this thought occurred to me: "Why should I not meditate in the breathless meditation (appānakaṃ jhānaṃ)?" So then, Bhāradvāja, I stopped the in-breaths and out-breaths through my mouth, my nose, and my ears. When I had stopped the in-breaths and out-breaths through my mouth, my nose, and my ears, exceedingly violent winds battered my head. Just as, Bhāradvāja, a strong man might grind my head with a sharp point, even so, when I had stopped the in-breaths and out-breaths through my mouth, my nose, and my ears, exceedingly violent winds battered my head. And yet, Bhāradvāja, my energy (vīriya) was aroused and unflagging, my mindfulness (sati) was established and unconfused; but my body was strained, not tranquil, because I was overwhelmed by that painful striving.
