Suttapiṭaka · Majjhimanikāya · Vol. 13 · Section 745

[745] Bhāradvāja, this thought occurred to me: 'What if I were to meditate in the breathless meditative absorption (appānaka jhāna)?' So, Bhāradvāja, I stopped the in-breaths and out-breaths through my mouth and nose. When, Bhāradvāja, my in-breaths and out-breaths through mouth and nose were stopped, there was an exceedingly loud sound of winds escaping through my ear-holes. Just as there is an exceedingly loud sound when a smith's bellows are being blown, so too, Bhāradvāja, when my in-breaths and out-breaths through mouth and nose were stopped, there was an exceedingly loud sound of winds escaping through my ear-holes. But my energy (vīriya), Bhāradvāja, was roused and unflagging, my mindfulness (sati) was established and unconfused; yet my body was strained and not tranquil, overwhelmed as I was by that painful striving.
