[520] "Do not say so, friend Sañjikāputta; do not say so, friend Sañjikāputta. This, Sañjikāputta, I heard in the presence of my lady mother, received in her very presence. On one occasion, friend Sañjikāputta, the Blessed One was dwelling at Kosambī, in Ghosita's Park. Then my lady mother, being with child, approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, she sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, my lady mother said this to the Blessed One: 'Venerable sir, the child in my womb, whether a boy or a girl, goes to the Blessed One for refuge (saraṇa), and to the Dhamma, and to the Saṅgha of bhikkhus. May the Blessed One remember it as a lay follower (upāsaka) gone for refuge for life from this day forward.' On one occasion, friend Sañjikāputta, the Blessed One was dwelling right here among the Bhaggas, at Suṃsumāragira, in the deer park of the Bhesakaḷā Grove. Then my nurse, carrying me on her hip, approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, she stood to one side. Standing to one side, the nurse said this to the Blessed One: 'Venerable sir, this Prince Bodhi goes to the Blessed One for refuge, and to the Dhamma, and to the Saṅgha of bhikkhus. May the Blessed One remember him as a lay follower gone for refuge for life from this day forward.' And now, friend Sañjikāputta, for the third time I go to the Blessed One for refuge, and to the Dhamma, and to the Saṅgha of bhikkhus. May the Blessed One remember me as a lay follower gone for refuge for life from this day forward."
