[528] Now on that occasion the venerable Aṅgulimāla was seated not far from the Blessed One. Then the Blessed One, extending his right arm, said to King Pasenadi of Kosala: "Great king, this is Aṅgulimāla." Then fear arose in King Pasenadi of Kosala, trepidation arose, horripilation arose. Then the Blessed One, knowing that King Pasenadi of Kosala was afraid, agitated, with hair standing on end, said to King Pasenadi of Kosala: "Do not fear, great king; do not fear, great king. You have nothing to fear from him."
Then whatever fear, trepidation, or horripilation there was in King Pasenadi of Kosala subsided. Then King Pasenadi of Kosala approached the venerable Aṅgulimāla; having approached, he said to the venerable Aṅgulimāla: "Venerable sir, is the master indeed Aṅgulimāla?"
"So it is, great king."
"Of what clan (gotta) is the master's father? Of what clan is the master's mother?"
"Great king, my father is a Gagga; my mother is a Mantāṇī."
"Venerable sir, may the master Gagga Mantāṇiputta be at ease. I shall make effort to provide the master Gagga Mantāṇiputta with robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick."
Now on that occasion the venerable Aṅgulimāla was a forest-dweller, an alms-food eater, a rag-robe wearer, and a wearer of only the three robes. Then the venerable Aṅgulimāla said to King Pasenadi of Kosala: "Enough, great king; my triple robe is complete."
