[562] "Venerable sir, I have an inference drawn from the Dhamma (dhammanvaya) regarding the Blessed One: 'The Blessed One is a Perfectly Self-Awakened One; the Dhamma is well proclaimed by the Blessed One; the Saṅgha of the Blessed One's disciples is practicing well.' Here, venerable sir, O Blessed One, I see some ascetics and brahmins leading the holy life (brahmacariya) for a limited period—for ten years, for twenty years, for thirty years, for forty years. Then at a later time, well bathed, well anointed, with hair and beard groomed, they amuse themselves, supplied and endowed with the five cords of sensual pleasure (kāmaguṇā). But here, venerable sir, I see bhikkhus leading the holy life complete and pure for as long as life lasts, to their last breath. And I do not see, venerable sir, any other holy life apart from this one that is so complete and pure. This too, venerable sir, is an inference drawn from the Dhamma that I have regarding the Blessed One: 'The Blessed One is a Perfectly Self-Awakened One; the Dhamma is well proclaimed by the Blessed One; the Saṅgha of the Blessed One's disciples is practicing well.'"
