[576] "Great king, there are these four classes (vaṇṇā): khattiyas, brāhmaṇas, vessas, and suddas. Of these four classes, great king, two classes are declared foremost — the khattiyas and the brāhmaṇas — that is, in respect of salutation, rising up in welcome, the gesture of reverence with joined palms (añjalikamma), and proper acts of respect (sāmīcikamma)."
"Venerable sir, I do not ask the Blessed One about this present life; I ask the Blessed One about the life to come. Venerable sir, there are these four classes: khattiyas, brāhmaṇas, vessas, and suddas. Among these four classes, venerable sir, might there be any distinction, might there be any difference?"
