[591] Then the Blessed One, wandering by stages in the Videha country, arrived at Mithilā. There the Blessed One dwelt near Mithilā, in the Maghadeva Mango Grove.
The brahmins and householders of Mithilā heard: "The ascetic Gotama, the Sakyan son, gone forth from the Sakyan clan, wandering by stages in the Videha country with a great Saṅgha of bhikkhus, some five hundred bhikkhus, has arrived at Mithilā and is dwelling near Mithilā in the Maghadeva Mango Grove. And of that worthy Gotama this fair report has spread abroad: 'Thus indeed is that Blessed One: an arahant (arahaṃ), fully self-awakened (sammāsambuddho), accomplished in true knowledge (vijjā) and conduct, sublime, knower of the world, unsurpassed trainer of persons to be tamed, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed. Having realized it with his own direct knowledge, he makes known this world with its gods, with its Māras, with its Brahmās, this generation with its ascetics and brahmins, with its gods and humans. He teaches the Dhamma good in the beginning, good in the middle, good in the end, with its meaning and its phrasing; he reveals the holy life (brahmacariya) entirely complete and pure. Good indeed is the sight of such arahants.'"
Then the brahmins and householders of Mithilā approached the Blessed One. Having approached, some paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side; some exchanged greetings with the Blessed One and, when the courteous and memorable talk was concluded, sat down to one side; some raised their joined palms in salutation toward the Blessed One and sat down to one side; some announced their name and clan in the presence of the Blessed One and sat down to one side; some, remaining silent, sat down to one side.
