[615] Then Assalāyana the young brahmin, together with a large company of brahmins, approached the Blessed One; having approached, he exchanged greetings with the Blessed One, and when the courteous and amiable talk was concluded, he sat down to one side. Seated to one side, Assalāyana the young brahmin said this to the Blessed One: "Worthy Gotama, the brahmins say thus: 'Only brahmins are the highest caste (vaṇṇa); any other caste is inferior. Only brahmins are the fair caste; any other caste is dark. Only brahmins are purified, not non-brahmins. Only brahmins are Brahmā's sons, his offspring, born of his mouth, born of Brahmā, created by Brahmā, heirs of Brahmā.' What does the worthy Gotama say about this?"
