Suppose there were here two young brahmin students (māṇavaka), brothers born of the same mother — one a student of the scriptures who has been initiated (upanīta), the other not a student of the scriptures and not initiated. Which of them would the brahmins feed first, whether at a memorial offering for the departed (saddha), at an offering of a ceremonial dish of milk-rice (thālipāka), at a sacrifice, or at a feast for guests?"
"Worthy Gotama, the young student who is a student of the scriptures and has been initiated — him the brahmins would feed first, whether at a memorial offering for the departed, at an offering of a ceremonial dish of milk-rice, at a sacrifice, or at a feast for guests. For how, worthy Gotama, could what is given to one who is not a student of the scriptures and not initiated be of great fruit?"
