[625] "What do you think, Assalāyana? Suppose here they were to mate a mare (vaḷavā) with a donkey, and in consequence of their union a foal (kisora) were to be born. Would that foal born of the mare and the donkey — resembling the mother and resembling the father alike — be fit to be called both a horse and a donkey?"
"That one, worthy Gotama, being the offspring of a mixed union, is a mule (assatara). Here, worthy Gotama, I see a difference in its case; but there, in the former cases, I see no difference at all among them."
