[631] When this was said, the Venerable Udena descended from the walking path, entered the dwelling, and sat down on the seat that had been prepared. The brahmin Ghoṭamukha too descended from the walking path, entered the dwelling, and stood to one side. As he stood to one side, the Venerable Udena said this to the brahmin Ghoṭamukha: "Brahmin, there are seats; if you wish, please sit down."
"It was just this — awaiting the honorable Udena's invitation — that we did not sit; for how indeed could one such as I presume to sit down on a seat without first being invited?"
Then the brahmin Ghoṭamukha took a certain low seat and sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, the brahmin Ghoṭamukha said this to the Venerable Udena: "Good ascetic, there is no righteous going forth (dhammika paribbaja) — such is my view in this matter; and that because of my not seeing honorable ones such as yourself, or whatever dhamma there may be herein."
"Brahmin, if you would concede to me what should be conceded, and reject what should be rejected; and if there be anything I say whose meaning you do not understand, you would question me further about it there, saying: 'Sir Udena, how is this? What is the meaning of this?' — this being done, there might be conversation and discussion between us on this matter."
"I shall concede to the honorable Udena what should be conceded, and I shall reject what should be rejected; and whatever the honorable Udena says whose meaning I do not understand, I shall question the honorable Udena further about it there, saying: 'Sir Udena, how is this? What is the meaning of this?' — this being done, let there be conversation and discussion between us on this matter."
