[647] The brahmins and householders of Opāsāda heard: "It is said, sirs, that the ascetic Gotama, the Sakyan son gone forth from the Sakyan clan, wandering on tour in the Kosalan country together with a large Saṅgha of bhikkhus, has arrived at Opāsāda and is dwelling to the north of Opāsāda, in the Deva Grove, the grove of sāla trees. Now concerning that worthy Gotama such a fair report has spread abroad: 'Thus indeed is that Blessed One: an arahant, a perfectly self-awakened one, accomplished in true knowledge and conduct, a Fortunate One (sugata), knower of the world, unsurpassed trainer of persons to be tamed, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed. Having himself realized with direct knowledge this world — with its gods, its Māras, its Brahmās, this generation with its ascetics and brahmins, with its gods and humans — he makes it known. He teaches a Dhamma that is good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, with its meaning and its phrasing; he proclaims the holy life (brahmacariya) entirely complete and pure. Good indeed is the sight of arahants such as this.'"
Then the brahmins and householders of Opāsāda, having departed from Opāsāda, forming into groups and companies, went facing north toward the Deva Grove, the grove of sāla trees.
Now at that time the brahmin Caṅkī had retired for his midday rest on the upper storey of his mansion.
