[651] Now on that occasion a brahmin student named Kāpadika (kāpaṭika in other editions), young, shaven-headed, sixteen years of age from birth, was sitting in that assembly — a master of the three Vedas together with their vocabularies (nighaṇḍu) and ritual manuals (keṭubha), with their phonology and analysis of words, and with the histories (itihāsa) as a fifth; skilled in philology and grammar, and fully accomplished in cosmology (lokāyata) and in the marks of a great man. While the very senior brahmins were conversing with the Blessed One, he kept breaking in and interrupting their talk. Then the Blessed One rebuked the student Kāpadika: "Let the venerable Bhāradvāja not interrupt while the very senior brahmins are conversing; let the venerable Bhāradvāja wait until the talk is finished."
