[652] When this was said, the brahmin Caṅkī said this to the Blessed One: "Let the worthy Gotama not rebuke the young brahmin Kāpadika. The young brahmin Kāpadika is a clansman of good family; the young brahmin Kāpadika is learned; the young brahmin Kāpadika is wise; the young brahmin Kāpadika is of fine and graceful speech; and the young brahmin Kāpadika is capable of debating with the worthy Gotama on this matter."
Then it occurred to the Blessed One: "Surely the young brahmin Kāpadika must be accomplished in the scriptural teaching of the three Vedas; that is why the brahmins put him forward."
Then it occurred to the young brahmin Kāpadika: "When the ascetic Gotama brings his eye to meet my eye, then I shall ask the ascetic Gotama a question."
Then the Blessed One, having known with his own mind the reflection in the mind (citta) of the young brahmin Kāpadika, turned his eyes toward the young brahmin Kāpadika. Then it occurred to the young brahmin Kāpadika: "The ascetic Gotama is attending to me. Suppose I were to ask the ascetic Gotama a question."
Then the young brahmin Kāpadika said this to the Blessed One: "Worthy Gotama, as to the ancient hymnal texts (mantapada) of the brahmins, handed down by oral tradition and by the collections of scripture — concerning these the brahmins come to the categorical conclusion: 'This alone is true; anything else is futile.' What does the worthy Gotama say about this?"
