[678] "What do you think, Dhanañjāni? Suppose some person here were to conduct himself contrary to the Dhamma (adhammacārī), to conduct himself unrighteously (visamacārī), for the sake of his slaves, workers, and servants; and on account of that conduct contrary to the Dhamma and unrighteous conduct, the wardens of hell (nirayapālā) were to drag him off to hell (niraya). Would he obtain [his plea]: 'It was for the sake of my slaves, workers, and servants that I conducted myself contrary to the Dhamma and unrighteously — let not the wardens of hell [drag] me to hell'? Or would his slaves, workers, and servants obtain [their plea]: 'It was for our sake that he conducted himself contrary to the Dhamma and unrighteously — let not the wardens of hell [drag] him to hell'?"
"No indeed, worthy Sāriputta. Rather, even as he wailed, the wardens of hell would cast him down into hell."
