[687] "What do you think, Dhanañjāni? One who, for the sake of his wife and children, is one of unrighteous conduct (adhammacārī), of unjust conduct (visamacārī), or one who, for the sake of his wife and children, is one of righteous conduct (dhammacārī), of just conduct (samacārī) — which is better?"
"Master Sāriputta, one who, for the sake of his wife and children, is one of unrighteous conduct, of unjust conduct — that is not better; but one who, for the sake of his wife and children, is one of righteous conduct, of just conduct — that alone is better here. For righteous conduct and just conduct, Master Sāriputta, are better than unrighteous conduct and unjust conduct."
"Dhanañjāni, there are other kinds of work, profitable (sahetukā) and righteous, by which one can both support one's wife and children, and refrain from doing evil deeds, and practice the way of merit (puñña)."
