[686] "What do you think, Dhanañjāni? One who, for the sake of mother and father, would conduct himself contrary to the Dhamma, unrighteously, or one who, for the sake of mother and father, would conduct himself in accordance with the Dhamma, righteously — which of these is better?"
"Master Sāriputta, one who, for the sake of mother and father, would conduct himself contrary to the Dhamma, unrighteously — that is not better; but, Master Sāriputta, one who, for the sake of mother and father, would conduct himself in accordance with the Dhamma, righteously — that alone is better here. For, Master Sāriputta, conduct in accordance with the Dhamma and righteous conduct are better than conduct contrary to the Dhamma and unrighteous conduct."
"There are, Dhanañjāni, other kinds of work, productive (sahetukā) and in accordance with the Dhamma, by means of which one can both support one's mother and father, and not do evil deeds, and practice the way of merit (puñña)."
