[699] "Worthy Sāriputta, I am not bearing up; I cannot keep going. My painful feelings (vedanā) are severe; they advance and do not recede; their advancing is evident, not their receding. Just as if, worthy Sāriputta, a strong man were to grind into my head with a sharp point, even so, worthy Sāriputta, do violent winds bore through my head. Worthy Sāriputta, I am not bearing up; I cannot keep going. My painful feelings are severe; they advance and do not recede; their advancing is evident, not their receding. Just as if, worthy Sāriputta, a strong man were to fasten a head-binding upon my head with a tough leather strap, even so, worthy Sāriputta, are the feelings in my head extreme. Worthy Sāriputta, I am not bearing up; I cannot keep going. My painful feelings are severe; they advance and do not recede; their advancing is evident, not their receding. Just as if, worthy Sāriputta, a skilled butcher of cattle or a butcher's apprentice were to carve open the belly with a sharp cattle-knife, even so, worthy Sāriputta, do violent winds carve through my belly. Worthy Sāriputta, I am not bearing up; I cannot keep going. My painful feelings are severe; they advance and do not recede; their advancing is evident, not their receding. Just as if, worthy Sāriputta, two strong men were to seize a weaker man by both arms and roast and scorch him over a pit of glowing coals, even so, worthy Sāriputta, is there an extreme burning in my body. Worthy Sāriputta, I am not bearing up; I cannot keep going. My painful feelings are severe; they advance and do not recede; their advancing is evident, not their receding."
