[701] The Venerable Sāriputta said this: "And what, Dhanañjāni, is the path to companionship with Brahmā? Here, Dhanañjāni, a bhikkhu dwells pervading one direction with a mind imbued with loving-kindness (mettā), likewise the second, likewise the third, likewise the fourth; so too above, below, across, everywhere, to all as to himself, he dwells pervading the entire world with a mind imbued with loving-kindness—abundant, exalted (mahaggata), measureless, without enmity, without ill will. This too, Dhanañjāni, is a path to companionship with Brahmā.
Again, Dhanañjāni, a bhikkhu with a mind imbued with compassion (karuṇā) … with a mind imbued with altruistic joy (muditā) … dwells pervading one direction with a mind imbued with equanimity (upekkhā), likewise the second, likewise the third, likewise the fourth; so too above, below, across, everywhere, to all as to himself, he dwells pervading the entire world with a mind imbued with equanimity—abundant, exalted, measureless, without enmity, without ill will. This, Dhanañjāni, is the path to companionship with Brahmā."
"Then, worthy Sāriputta, in my name bow your head at the feet of the Blessed One, saying: 'Venerable sir, the brahmin Dhanañjāni is sick, in pain, gravely ill; he bows his head at the feet of the Blessed One.'"
