[715] Subha: "Truth (saccaṃ), worthy Gotama, is the first thing the brahmins prescribe for the making of merit (puñña), for the accomplishment of the skillful (kusala). Austerity (tapaṃ), worthy Gotama, is the second thing the brahmins prescribe for the making of merit, for the accomplishment of the skillful. The chaste life (brahmacariyaṃ), worthy Gotama, is the third thing the brahmins prescribe for the making of merit, for the accomplishment of the skillful. Recitation (ajjhenaṃ), worthy Gotama, is the fourth thing the brahmins prescribe for the making of merit, for the accomplishment of the skillful. Generosity (cāgaṃ), worthy Gotama, is the fifth thing the brahmins prescribe for the making of merit, for the accomplishment of the skillful. The brahmins, worthy Gotama, prescribe these five things for the making of merit, for the accomplishment of the skillful. What does the worthy Gotama say about this?"
