[716] "But, student, is there even a single brahmin among the brahmins who says thus: 'I declare the result of these five things, having realized it for myself with direct knowledge (abhiññā)'?"
"No indeed, Master Gotama."
"But, student, is there even a single teacher of the brahmins, even a single teacher's teacher, back through seven generations of teachers, who says thus: 'I declare the result of these five things, having realized it for myself with direct knowledge'?"
"No indeed, Master Gotama."
"But, student, what of those ancient seers of the brahmins, the composers of the hymns, the propagators of the hymns, whose ancient hymnal — sung, recited, and compiled — the brahmins of the present day still sing along and recite along, reciting what was recited and teaching what was taught — namely, Aṭṭhaka, Vāmaka, Vāmadeva, Vessāmitta, Yamataggi, Aṅgīrasa, Bhāradvāja, Vāseṭṭha, Kassapa, and Bhagu — did even they say thus: 'We declare the result of these five, having realized it for ourselves with direct knowledge'?"
