[727] "Student, these five things which the brahmins prescribe for the making of merit, for the accomplishment of the wholesome — where do you see them mostly?"
"Master Gotama, these five things which the brahmins prescribe for the making of merit, for the accomplishment of the wholesome — I see these five things mostly among those gone forth, and little among householders. For a householder, Master Gotama, has many needs, many duties, many issues, many undertakings: he is not constantly and continually a speaker of truth. But one gone forth, Master Gotama, has few needs, few duties, few issues, few undertakings: he is constantly and continually a speaker of truth. For a householder, Master Gotama, has many needs, many duties, many issues, many undertakings: he is not constantly and continually fervent (tapassī) … one who lives the holy life (brahmacārī) … one much given to recitation … one much given to generosity. But one gone forth, Master Gotama, has few needs, few duties, few issues, few undertakings: he is constantly and continually fervent … one who lives the holy life … one much given to recitation … one much given to generosity. Master Gotama, these five things which the brahmins prescribe for the making of merit, for the accomplishment of the wholesome — I see these five things mostly among those gone forth, and little among householders."
