[728] "Student, those five things that the brahmins prescribe for the making of merit, for the accomplishment of the skillful — I declare these to be equipment (parikkhāra) of the mind (citta), that is, for developing a mind that is without enmity and without affliction (abyāpajjha). Here, student, a bhikkhu is a speaker of truth. Thinking, 'I am a speaker of truth,' he gains inspiration in the meaning (atthaveda), gains inspiration in the Dhamma (dhammaveda), gains gladness (pāmojja) connected with the Dhamma; that gladness connected with the skillful I declare to be equipment of the mind, that is, for developing a mind that is without enmity and without affliction. Here, student, a bhikkhu is fervent (tapassī) … lives the holy life … is one of much recitation … is one of much giving. Thinking, 'I am one of much giving,' he gains inspiration in the meaning, gains inspiration in the Dhamma, gains gladness connected with the Dhamma; that gladness connected with the skillful I declare to be equipment of the mind, that is, for developing a mind that is without enmity and without affliction. Student, those five things that the brahmins prescribe for the making of merit, for the accomplishment of the skillful — I declare these to be equipment of the mind, that is, for developing a mind that is without enmity and without affliction."
When this was said, the student Subha, Todeyya's son, said to the Blessed One: "I have heard this, worthy Gotama: 'The ascetic Gotama knows the path to companionship with Brahmā.'"
