[732] Now at that time the brahmin Jāṇussoṇi was driving out of Sāvatthī in the middle of the day in an all-white chariot drawn by mares. The brahmin Jāṇussoṇi saw the young brahmin Subha, Todeyya's son, coming from afar, and seeing him, he said to the young brahmin Subha, Todeyya's son: "Well now, has Mister Bhāradvāja come in the middle of the day?"
"Indeed, sir, I have come here from the presence of the ascetic Gotama."
"What does Mister Bhāradvāja think of this: of the lucidity of wisdom of the ascetic Gotama—he is wise, I should think?"
"Sir, who am I, and who am I to know the lucidity of wisdom of the ascetic Gotama? Surely only one who was his equal could know the lucidity of wisdom of the ascetic Gotama."
"Indeed, Mister Bhāradvāja praises the ascetic Gotama with lofty praise."
"Sir, who am I, and who am I to praise the ascetic Gotama? The worthy Gotama is praised by the praised, the best of gods and humans. And, sir, those five things which the brahmins prescribe for the making of merit, for the attainment of the wholesome (kusala)—the ascetic Gotama declares that these are prerequisites of the mind (citta), that is to say, for the development of a mind free of enmity and free of ill will (byāpāda)."
