[75] Then the householder Upāli, having delighted in and rejoiced at the Blessed One's words, rose from his seat, paid homage to the Blessed One, and, having circumambulated him keeping him on his right, went to his own residence. Having arrived, he addressed the gatekeeper: "From this day forth, friend gatekeeper, I close the door to the Nigaṇṭha men and the Nigaṇṭha women; the door is open to the Blessed One's disciples — the **bhikkhus**, bhikkhunīs, laymen (upāsakā), and laywomen (upāsikā). If any Nigaṇṭha comes, you should say to him thus: 'Stay, venerable sir, do not enter. From this day forth the householder Upāli has gone over to discipleship under the ascetic Gotama. The door is closed to the Nigaṇṭha men and the Nigaṇṭha women; the door is open to the Blessed One's disciples — the bhikkhus, bhikkhunīs, laymen, and laywomen. If, venerable sir, you have need of almsfood, stand right here; they will bring it to you right here.'" "Yes, sir," the gatekeeper replied to the householder Upāli.
