[79] Then, it is said, formerly, whenever the householder Upāli saw Nāṭaputta coming from afar, on seeing him he would go out from there to meet him, and whatever seat there was that was foremost, best, highest, and most excellent, he would wipe it with his upper robe, embrace him, and have him sit down upon it. But now, having himself sat down upon that seat there which was foremost, best, highest, and most excellent, he said this to the Nigaṇṭha Nāṭaputta: "There are seats, venerable householder; if you wish, sit down." When this was said, the Nigaṇṭha Nāṭaputta said to the householder Upāli: "You are mad, householder! You are a dolt, householder! You said, 'Venerable sir, I am going; I shall refute the doctrine of the ascetic Gotama,' and having gone, you have come back ensnared in the great net of his doctrine! Just as, householder, a man who went to carry off testicles might come back with his own testicles cut out, or just as, householder, a man who went to carry off eyes might come back with his own eyes plucked out, even so, householder, you said, 'Venerable sir, I am going; I shall refute the doctrine of the ascetic Gotama,' and having gone, you have come back ensnared in the great net of his doctrine! You have been converted, householder, by the ascetic Gotama with his converting magic (āvaṭṭanī māyā)!"
