[84] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling among the Koliyans; there is a town of the Koliyans named Haliddavasana. Then Puṇṇa the Koliyan son (Koliyaputta), a practitioner of the cow observance (govattika), and Seniya, a naked ascetic (acela) and practitioner of the dog observance (kukkuravattika), approached the Blessed One. Having approached, Puṇṇa the Koliyan son, the practitioner of the cow observance, paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side; but Seniya the naked ascetic, the practitioner of the dog observance, exchanged greetings with the Blessed One, and when that courteous and memorable talk was concluded, he curled up like a dog and sat down to one side.
Sitting to one side, Puṇṇa the Koliyan son, the practitioner of the cow observance, said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, this naked ascetic Seniya, the practitioner of the dog observance, does what is hard to do: he eats food placed on the ground. That dog observance (kukkuravatta) has long been fully undertaken by him. What will be his destination (gati)? What will be his future state (abhisamparāya)?"
"Enough, Puṇṇa, let that be. Do not ask me that."
A second time Puṇṇa the Koliyan son, the practitioner of the cow observance, said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, this naked ascetic Seniya, the practitioner of the dog observance, does what is hard to do: he eats food placed on the ground. That dog observance has long been fully undertaken by him. What will be his destination? What will be his future state?"
"Enough, Puṇṇa, let that be. Do not ask me that."
A third time Puṇṇa the Koliyan son, the practitioner of the cow observance, said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, this naked ascetic Seniya, the practitioner of the dog observance, does what is hard to do: he eats food placed on the ground. That dog observance has long been fully undertaken by him. What will be his destination? What will be his future state?"
