[114] When this was said, the brahmin Vassakāra, the chief minister of Magadha, addressed General Upananda: "What do you think of that, General? In that these venerable ones thus honor what should be honored, respect what should be respected, revere what should be revered, and venerate what should be venerated — surely these venerable ones do honor what should be honored, respect what should be respected, revere what should be revered, and venerate what should be venerated. For if these venerable ones were not to honor, not to respect, not to revere, and not to venerate this, then what indeed would these venerable ones honor, respect, revere, and venerate, and — having honored and respected it … — live in dependence upon?"
