[177] "'When my mind (citta) was thus concentrated—purified, cleansed, unblemished, rid of defilements, malleable, wieldy, steady, and attained to imperturbability—I directed the mind to the knowledge of the destruction of the taints (āsavakkhayañāṇa). I directly knew as it really is: "This is suffering (dukkha)"; I directly knew as it really is: "This is the origin of suffering"; I directly knew as it really is: "This is the cessation of suffering"; I directly knew as it really is: "This is the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering." I directly knew as it really is: "These are the taints (āsava)"; I directly knew as it really is: "This is the origin of the taints"; I directly knew as it really is: "This is the cessation of the taints"; I directly knew as it really is: "This is the way of practice leading to the cessation of the taints." When I knew thus and saw thus, my mind was liberated from the taint of sensuality, my mind was liberated from the taint of existence, and my mind was liberated from the taint of ignorance. When it was liberated, there arose the knowledge (ñāṇa): "It is liberated." I directly knew: "Birth is destroyed, the holy life (brahmacariya) has been lived, what was to be done has been done, there is nothing further for this state of being." It is when I know thus and see thus, friends, that with regard to this conscious body and all external signs (nimitta), the underlying tendencies (anusaya) to I-making, mine-making, and conceit have been thoroughly eradicated.'
"Bhikkhus, that bhikkhu's statement should be delighted in and rejoiced in, saying, 'Good!' Having delighted in and rejoiced in his statement, saying, 'Good!' he should be addressed thus: 'It is a gain for us, friend; it is well gained by us, friend, that we behold a venerable one such as you as a companion in the holy life.'"
Thus spoke the Blessed One. Delighted, those bhikkhus rejoiced in the Blessed One's words.
